Shelyn is a goddess of love and beauty, and once sharedher powers with her half-brother Dou-Bral. Longago, however, the goddess suffered a great loss whenher brother’s explorations into the darkness betweenworlds awoke a deep corruption that overcame his souland turned him into Zon-Kuthon, god of agony. Shestruggled against him and eventually fought him to abitter stalemate, and now carries his glaive, the Whispererof Souls, as a reminder of the pain of loss and the devotionof true love; one cannot know her without knowing thesuffering of her brother. As a result, she is a goddess notjust of love, beauty, and art, but also of sacrifice, and abalm to the broken-hearted. Her alignment is neutralgood; her portfolio is art, beauty, love, and music; and herdomains are Air, Charm, Good, Luck, and Protection.Her favored weapon is the glaive.

Of all the paths you might choose as a worshiper ofShelyn, that of bard seems most appropriate. As an artist,a creator of love and beauty, you give voice to the songs ofthe world and form to its visions. Clerics of Shelyn followmuch the same path, and often make excellent artistsand teachers in addition to healers. If you are a ranger or druid, you might well find the worship of Shelyn to yourliking—after all, what else but love of the beauty of thewild drew you to your profession?

If you are a fighter, you are quick and graceful,preferring light weapons and armor so that you can floatthrough combat with light and expressive movements.You might be a barbarian as well, though you find it difficult to reconcile your destructive rage with your love of beauty. If you are a paladin of Shelyn, you focus more oncourtly love than on love’s physical manifestations, anddo everything you can to make yourself a living shield between beauty and purity and those forces that wouldconsume or destroy them. If you have chosen a monk’spath, you meditate on the nature of beauty and its placein the world, and spend much of your day attemptingto create beauty with every step. If you are a rogue, youmight be a highbrow art or jewel thief, stealing fromthose who do not appreciate the great works for aught buttheir monetary value. If your journey is that of the wizardor sorcerer, you use your powers to bring peace and joyto the world. Illusionists, enchanters, and evokers areespecially welcome; necromancers are not. Summonerssometimes worship her as well, as the crafting of theireidolons is nothing less than an art form with formlesslife energies as its medium.

Followers of Shelyn endeavor to make themselvesbeautiful, though not necessarily arousing—lust is thepurview of Calistria, and while Shelyn's no prude, sheknows the difference between true love and mere carnalattraction. As a worshiper of the Eternal Rose, you'relikely to wear bright colors and flattering clothes, andmay use makeup and jewelry to draw attention to yourmost attractive features. You might carry a glaive platedwith gold leaf; if you are an adventurer, you may carrya small pin or token with this symbol or Shelyn's long-tailed bird sigil, crafted by your own hands of the mostsplendid materials you can afford.

For the most part, those who worship Shelyn are alreadyartists devoted to their art, which suits Shelyn just fine.Those who favor purely carnal relationships look toCalistria, but if you have understood the deeper joys ofthe spirit in higher forms of love, you are already belovedof Shelyn, and every act of true love and devotion isitself pleasing to the goddess. The deeper your faith, themore involved you are with acts of daily creation, withnurturing the inner beauty of others, and with promotingthe cause of good.

In general, the faithful of Shelyn have excellent relationswith all of the other good and neutral religions, and eventhe servants of evil gods find much to love about yourgoddess and her followers. Love is a natural part of mortalnature, and while many people don’t understand what ittruly means or pervert it to strange ends, love is still thekey to their hearts and their souls. Many of your brethrenhave redeemed others with this simple fact. Even thehorrid worshipers of Zon-Kuthon are not immuneto the powers of love—your job is to recognizethat everyone is capable of love, and to rememberthat even the seemingly irredeemable deserve someversion of it. As a result of this gentle and generousneutrality, you tend to get along well with people ofall denominations, even the totally backward andabhorrent ones.

Shelyn’s faith is scattered across thenortheastern portion of the Inner Searegion, with a few far-flung exceptions. Shelyn is usuallydepicted as a Taldan human, as her faith is strongestthere, but many worshipers of other races and ethnicitiesquietly illustrate her as a beautiful woman of their ownpeople. She also has significant followings in placeslike Absalom, Galt, and Sargava, where her followersattempt to fashion great works based on the beauty ofthe surrounding lands—or the great anguish of thoseregions and the suffering of the people.Her church is informal and disorganized; after all, artis not created by committee. You and your cohort treasurewisdom, not necessarily organization, and thus youmake decisions as a community, with the wisest choiceprevailing. If you disagree with a decision, you are free tofollow your own path or else disavow it. Local temples areunder the control of the local clergy, but traveling clericsare always welcome to offer their perspectivesand show what they have learned intheir travels. Shelyn’s templesare extremely popular forweddings, and her priests arefrequently called on to preside over such services.

The Temple of the Upheld and Golden Rose in Oppara, capital city of Taldor, is the oldest known temple ofShelyn. It is an intricateaffair, fluted and opento  the  sky.  Brightbirds roost around itscentral courtyard, andexquisite  musiciansplay tunes appropriateto the hour and theweather throughout theyear. It is said that once ayear, the goddess herselfwalks among the faithfulhere (though hidden to theireyes), personally blessing those whobest embody her qualities. However,no one knows exactly which day it isthat this occurs, and so the temple sees aconstant flow of worshipers.

The collected doctrine of Shelyn is Melodies of Inner Beauty, more a hymnal than a prayerbook. Its pages contain stories of Shelyn, herfamily, her history, and her doctrine. Each iswritten in a different style: most are expressedthrough song, others through storytellingmeant to be accompanied by dance, and stillothers through epic verse.
