不少人认为黑魔法的习艺者和毒精魂与虫精魂的追随者一样邪恶且具有攻击性，但媒体并没有通过他们对这一流派的魔法习艺者的描述来帮着改变这种看法。从技术上讲，这一流派有着一种更为自私的魔法风格，通常用只于私利。就像暗影中的一切，归结起来不过是道德和价格方面的问题。所以可以有这么一位法师，他之所以使用黑魔法，只不过是在利用魔法过上幸福的生活，或者有这么一位企业高管，他使用黑魔法是为了在获得更多权力的过程中击败他的敌人。

Many people perceive practitioners of Black Magic as evil and as destructive as Toxic or Bug Spirit followers, and the media haven’t helped change that view with their representation of magical practitioners of this tradition. Technically this tradition is a more selfish style of magic, generally used for personal gain. Like everything in the shadows, it boils down to morality and price. So you can have the magician whose use of black magic involves nothing more than leveraging magic to live the good life, or the corporate executive whose use of black magic brings down his enemies as he climbs toward more power.

Black Magic values the self above all else. The self it values is not the spirit-quest, walkabout, find yourself-type self, but the unfettered selfishness that comes from viewing yourself as the center of your own universe. Nothing is more important than you and what you can get, grab, steal, manipulate, and own. Black Magic isn’t evil, per se, in that it doesn’t have any grand plan to destroy the universe or corrupt the youth, but if you consider selfishness to be evil, well, that’s what it is. Power, and keeping as much of it to yourself as possible, is what drives Black Magic practitioners.

The practice of magic is always for personal gain. Spells are chosen based on what the mage needs to further their own goals and influence others. This means that more often practitioners pick Manipulation and Health spells over Combat. Ritual spellcasting is used, but often with a team of one due to the fact there can only be one leader chosen when performing a ritual. There can be rare occurrences of teams, but then you have to question what is the motivation of the others besides survival.

• Selfish Magic: Beneficial health spells specifically can only be cast on self instead of others. Cannot cast ritual health spells. Health preparations cannot be created with alchemy. The practitioner gains +2 dice to spellcasting or the ritual spellcasting of spells that the they cast on themselves.
• Receive Animal Familiar quality for free.
• Receive Dark Ally quality for free. Spirit is a boggle (p. 117, Howling Shadows).
• Personal Demons: Spirits summoned automatically gain one of the following: • Fear power (automatic instead of optional). • Flight skill equal to Force. • Natural Weaponry (DV = Strength + 2).

She’s based out of Manhattan, and a few years ago she put up a post on the Matrix saying she was looking for students. While most Black Mages are wary of those who advertise their commitment to the Black Arts, Juliette seems to have gathered quite a cadre of fairly competent mages. That is either very stupid for her or very dangerous for Manhattan.

For Buddhists in the Sixth World, magic springs from personal self-development and spiritual enlightenment. The Buddhist magical tradition mainly stems from one sect of Buddhism—Vajrayana or Tantric Buddhism, generally—as the other sects do not teach specific techniques related to sorcery and summoning and instead see magic as another part of reality that must be overcome to find enlightenment (Nirvana). Many magicians who follow the Wuxing or Shinto tradition also consider themselves followers of Buddhism. Buddhists can be called yogis (or yoginis), though this is a general term for practitioners of Southeast Asian religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Traditionalists prefer the title Bodhisattva. While Vajrayana Buddhism originated in Tibet (which is now magically sealed off from the rest of the world), it can be found in communities throughout Asia, from India to Japan, and into North America, especially the West Coast.

Some see it as a way of changing reality. Buddhist ritual spellcasting techniques are called mantras. It is a method of mind and body meditation incorporating qi-like channeling of mana energies.

Beads or religious items may be used as fetishes.

In Bellingham, in the Salish-Shidhe, there is a Buddhist teacher called Jeremy Blue Sky. You can find him at the shrine he built in Sedro-Woolley. He doesn’t suffer any distractions, so don’t go see him unless you have a good amount of time to devote to his tutelage. Blue Sky is a full member of the tribe and participates fully in its doings, but he doesn’t seem to have an agenda for his Buddhist devotion besides reaching Nirvana and teaching others to find the same.
