Something that is very important to know—riggers can do it all, even magic! They have such a wide array of tech and systems to control and command it all, and they can act as a one-man runner team. Is it ever that easy? Not usually. Do they need the skillset of a trid-show spy? Probably. But they could if they put their mind to it. However, what they usually do is select a particular area of rigging and get really good at that. They’ll have some other skills and usually a decent understanding of everything a rigger could do, but these are the real shadows, not some made-up game or trid show. Riggers can fill in or back-up just about any spot on a runner team. They aren’t just the transport, and sometimes aren’t the transport at all, but let’s take a look at what having a rigger around is going to do for your team.
Transportation is the first thing that always comes to mind when vetting good riggers for a job. The key is remembering that riggers aren’t all wheelmen. When you see your rigger roll up to the meet in a tricked-out Bulldog, your first thought is probably about how chill it is that you can all stick together, but the reality is probably a cargo area with enough space to fix the drones that are racked and stacked. If you want your rigger to help with transport, get your ride adapted for them so they can make the best use of it.
I can hear the response already from that last line. “But we hire the rigger so we can trash their vehicle because they can fix it!” Don’t be that runner. Riggers aren’t all mechanics, and even the ones that are don’t like spending all their spare nuyen patching bullet holes and painting over scorch marks and scratches. They can also do the same for your ride, too. And your car probably isn’t full of expensive electronics and gear that doesn’t respond well to ricocheting lead.
Riggers trained in this area are great to have around for transportation, but remember, I said “trained,” and remember to check what modes of transportation they operate. Riggers can specialize or be a jack of all trades, and it’s important to know what they operate and what they don’t. If you’re looking for someone good at handling tight urban streets, make sure they drive an Americar, not a Vista. If you happen to be looking for a rigger to do a rooftop extract, make sure they’ve got an Osprey and not a Banshee. If your team needs a ride from the Emerald City to Bug City, make sure they’re using a Bergen and not a Xenon. Transport is one of the easiest jobs for a good rigger if they have the right equipment.
Riggers aren’t a one-size-fits-all group of guys and gals. They’re as varied and specialized as the muscle you’re running with. The only thing every rigger has in common is that control rig. Like everything else, you have to know who you’re talking to and what you’re looking for to get the right ride at the right time. Let’s move on and look at a few other roles the rigger can flesh out for a team.
Surveillance is often confused with reconnaissance. I cover the second one later, but riggers are especially well equipped to perform surveillance. They’re good at reconnaissance, too, don’t get me wrong, but I’ll cover that later as I said.
See what I did there? I repeated something just to get you to think about it, and possibly distract you. That’s how a mark throws off a tail or gets them to reveal themselves,
but a rigger isn’t limited to just one tail. A rigger will run several tails at once so that when one would be burned by a double-back, another can pick up the trail. A regular surveillance team could consist of half a dozen people trying to work in coordination to pull that off, while one rigger can have a dozen drones that he’s jumping between and keeping on a rotation. Half a dozen people trying to coordinate, or one person running the whole show. Advantage rigger.

A rigger brings a wide range of surveillance options to a runner team. In urban environments, there are very few places that a drone or a vehicle won’t blend in with the background, given it is the right kind. Using a series of them, spread all around, is the advantage a rigger has over traditional surveillance. Drones are easy to deploy, leave stationed on a rooftop, flow within the dronestream, float among the other advertisements, or sit so high up they are indistinguishable from the sky. In rural areas, the options are different. Riggers will trade the usual, one among many, method of blending in for being unseen or blending in in a different way. Out here they can use smaller drones to stay hidden or disguised within nature. They can use camouflage in the form of traditional shape-breaking methods or more advanced ruthenium polymer or ElectroPaint options to hide almost anywhere. The most common change a rigger will make with rural surveillance is distance. With advanced optics and microphones, their drones can be a kilometer away and still
see and hear everything going on with a target. Distance combined with the right paint job and the rigger is golden. Traditional methods can do similar things, but again require large amounts of personnel coordination over even longer distances. Once again, advantage rigger.
Not only can riggers take on the role of surveillance, but they tend to be the superior option to traditional methods. Now, hackers can work a lot of similar areas by snagging camera feeds or taking over drones from their standard users, but hackers have the issue of GOD. A rigger operates without the coding designed to draw the attention of authorities. Not that GOD has never blasted a rigger out of the Matrix—it has happened—but at nowhere near the frequency of hackers getting the boot
and scoop.
Next up, combat rigging. Who needs an angsty, anti-social, over-cybered street samurai, or prissy, hyper-zen adept when you can have an army of drones with no anger issues, the ability to follow orders and execute a plan, no drama, and best of all, no itchy trigger fingers. Riggers can easily replace the muscle on a runner team with drones that lack the chemical miasma that is the human psyche. They may not be able to solve some problems that require lateral thinking, but they can quickly be commanded to execute whatever solution
the rest of the team or the rigger decides on.
With drones of all shapes, sizes, and combat potential, riggers also have the potential of bringing a much wider range of options to the solutions table. A microdrone, or even a small swarm of them, with small gas payloads, a dart, electrical discharge, or chemical syringe stinger can go in quiet to take out guards just like that former corporate operative who no one trusts because he lives a life of secrecy. Minidrones pack a little more punch or versatility in the same role. Larger drones often become more specialized, but riggers do a lot of customizations that blend into the original design but add features that are useful to the specific job. These can often be snuck in as service drones for a building or personal assistants, and then they deploy their hidden talents once inside the facility. These talents can be quite exceptional when they are directly inhabited by the rigger.
The most obvious advantage the rigger brings in terms of being the team’s combat support is numbers in a direct assault. While we are called shadowrunners, insinuating some level of stealth in our activities, open and obvious violence is often the only solution some people see. Here riggers are like military fire support. They can bring in several drones with commands for suppression or specific targeting. They can arm them with a range of weapons and ammunitions to cover several contingency plans. They can be commanded to stop firing, switch targets, move, cover a new area, charge straight in, and even self-destruct without any argument, attitude, delay, or hesitation, all with a single thought from the rigger.
The single greatest thing a rigger brings to any runner team in terms of combat prowess is the ability to sacrifice without regret. Yes, there are some riggers out there who grow very attached to their drones and would never let anyone send them in on a suicide mission, but most riggers understand that drones are expendable assets that can easily be replaced, unlike metahuman lives. The team that uses the rigger as their combat support will rarely know that moment of saying tearful goodbyes to the one member who needs to stay back and hold off the oncoming wave while the rest of the team escapes, because the rigger will happily wade into the maelstrom in his synthetic shell to hold off the opposition. Even if they “die,” it’s an unpleasant, but rarely fatal, case of dumpshock and they’re back in action. Again, I have to say, advantage rigger.
I moved reconnaissance down here, though it was mentioned above, because I’m trying to progress down the order of what riggers tend to be best at handling versus other team members. When it comes to reconnaissance, riggers are great. They have a range of drones
with an abundance of sensor systems that can get every drop of intel on a target person or site. I move it down here because, I’ll admit, this is often just as easily done by others with similar sensors and equipment as you’d find on the drone. And since most reconnaissance requires getting somewhere and then watching or recording, drones and metahumans both have their strengths and weaknesses.
Riggers are perfect for stealthy flybys with an aircraft or drone. They can record the data they take in and either feed it back instantly or bring it back after they’re done. Long-range sensor systems make this easier, but those same systems can be employed by the opposition. Drones offer a way to feed the data back right up to the point that the target notices and hides or destroys the drone. Loss of a drone is better than loss of a life inside an aircraft.
On the ground, a rigger can get a drone into place and watch, but they are limited to the power life of the drone. People may get cold, uncomfortable, or cranky, but they can bring something along to easily replenish their energy in the field. Yes, they may have to sleep, but hiding and sleeping is a better option than needing to travel back and recharge or refuel, especially when it comes to long-term reconnaissance, because spotting something that is out of place is all it takes to blow the recon—especially if the thing is seen more than once.
When it comes to going into a facility for reconnaissance, drones cannot always replace people, but they always offer the less costly option for failure. If a person is caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, the recon is blown and the person needs to get out. If a drone falls into the same situation, the recon is still blown, but the drone can be abandoned. Yes, people can talk their way out, but that’s why this is down here. It’s a job a rigger can cover for the team, but it isn’t the best option when considering which area of the team to leave in the hands of the rigger and which part you’re going to need to split the payday on.
Much like reconnaissance, infiltrating a site to get someone or something can be handled by a rigger with the right tools. That’s important to mention again, that it’s all about the right rigger with the right tools. The wrong rigger or the wrong tools means they aren’t going to cover the gap.

Infiltrating for a data steal is the best option for a rigger. They can take in a micro or minidrone that can get wherever the team needs and get access for the hacker to do their part. Move up to larger drones to impersonate (or would it be imdroneate?) a drone on site, and it’s again just a matter of getting the drone to the right place for the right access. Doors and other passage barriers are often an issue for a drone, but small drones can hide on the person or within the briefcase of someone going into the building. Options like this could involve planting the drone on an employee or the cooperation of the team’s infiltration specialist and the rigger to get in and use the drone to keep the access inconspicuous.
Infiltrating in order to grab something physical is tougher. The imposter drone method above might work if some method of getting the drone in and out can be developed. A mixed method with rigger and infiltration specialist to get the item and then plant it in a drone to head out, especially in the case of a rapid, non-standard exit, like out a window or quickly from a rooftop is ideal to keep the meat partner from walking out with the package. Special consideration should be given to a rigger skilled with anthroform drones, especially some of the lighter and stealthier models, that can be used to sneak around just like a metahuman, but again cost no loss of life if they are caught. Expense of these drones is something to consider, and the need for the rigger to possess, or be guided by someone with, appropriate training in infiltration techniques makes it more rare and expensive. Which is another reason infiltration is so low in this list. This would be one of those no-advantage calls.
Riggers are not hackers. They may occasionally partake in a little warfare on the airwaves, but their normal equipment, the RCC, is not configured to be a cyberdeck. That’s what cyberdecks are for. Of all things. That said, a rigger can manage to fill in a few of the aspects your hacker handles and can convincingly work to stymie the efforts of opposing hackers, though often at a cost. Let’s look at the two instances and try to help you develop an understanding of when your team’s rigger can cover a job and when you need to just cough up the cash for a real hacker.

Hackers are often asked to obstruct the communications of the opposition, handle the monitoring and securing of the team’s communications, gain and provide access to video or audio feeds from nearby or inside a facility, and help in accessing and bypassing electronic locks and security measures. The order above is intentional. The four areas are in the order in which a rigger tends to best be able to cover in some capacity.
The easiest is obstructing communications. Due to the nature of modern communications and the processing and bandwidth needs for accessing the Matrix, turning a commlink into a jammer is relatively easy. Riggers do it all the time in order to reduce the effectiveness of other riggers and hackers communicating in their vicinity. Have a burner handy and kick up the squelch. The move jams up the rigger along with everyone else, but the good ones have ways around that, especially if they know it’s coming. The standard jammer works in anyone’s hands, but it’s a jammer and becomes the instant target for opposing gun bunnies to clear the airwaves for their hacker. Harder to tell what’s muddling the airwaves when it’s a commlink just like everyone else has.
Securing the team’s communications can be like second nature to a rigger. Riggers are not huge fans of having their drones hacked and therefore tend to have a solid firewall on their RCC network to prevent it from happening. This same firewall can protect the team’s communications via their commlinks, if the rigger wants to slave those commlinks in place of some drones. The big potential downfall is the replacement of drones with commlinks, but in a pinch it’s something to do. Riggers also tend to have the technical know-how to make a pretty secure network with a decent commlink as well, as long as someone on the team didn’t skimp and is willing to be a bullseye for potential hackers. As a note, skimping on a ’link is getting a lot more common as SINs are getting harder to come by, and more and more megacorporations are having them hardwired onto commlinks.
A high priority for hackers on a runner team is providing intel, especially up to date visual and audio data by hacking into local camera feeds. Riggers can’t hack local feeds. What they can do is piggyback microdrones in places where there are cameras and match the feed. They can’t edit it, but at least they know what’s going on in a given location. This piggy-backing can also be quite handy if a rigger and hacker team up and while duplicating the video feed; in this instance, the drone also taps into the camera’s wiring for the hacker to get in. Remember, shadowrunners work in teams for a reason.
Last point is bypassing electronic locks. Hackers often do this with a simple wave of their hand. What goes on in the Matrix is a whole other ballgame, but you get the point. Riggers, most of them anyways, tend to have a decent understanding of electronics that they can use to take apart electronic locks and bypass them manually, rather than in the Matrix. It’s never as easy or quick as how hackers would do it, but it’s a place for riggers to back them up—or take the lead if necessary.
Time for the one everyone’s been waiting to jump on and cry foul: Magic! Now I don’t mean a rigger can cast spells or summon spirits, but they’ve got some countering and detecting tricks up their greasy sleeves. Plus, with flamethrowers, lasers, Stick ‘n’ Shock rounds, and grenades, I don’t think they’re lagging behind in the combat options field anyway. But let’s get specific on what I’m talking about here.
First, let’s discuss the countering options riggers provide against magic. The biggest of which is plain, old-fashioned line of sight. Riggers can deploy smoke, tint windows, cut off sight lines, and use lights to blind opposing spellcasters and prevent or hinder spellcasting, all through mundane means. Thanks to the great research & development departments at most of the major megacorporations, there are also a number of magic-inhibiting options that are not so mundane. Gas grenade loads that contain FAB (fluorescing astral bacteria)
can be used to detect spellcasting or hinder astral movement depending on whether the FAB-I or FAB-II strain is used. One of the best tricks riggers have developed lately to help out in the arcane arena is the AP grenade, usually called a dust bomb. AP doesn’t standfor armor piercing, but rather astral powder, a substance that is drawn to magically active items, including people. It’s the ultimate way to identify the opposition’s magical resources when you don’t have your own arcane specialist handy. Once those resources are identified, the rest of the team can decide how to apply the principles of “geek the mage first.”

Last in line here is a look at riggers taking over for the team’s face. Or at least, a drone taking over, if not the rigger. The move is not always the best option and sometimes considered in poor taste by Mr. Johnson, but if it gets the team more money when their negotiator is currently out of the picture, all that matters is that the Johnson goes with the deal. First off, even the cockiest rigger would never suggest sending in just a drone. Some other member of the team needs to go in, preferably the muscle (as long as they are the type
of muscle that knows not to talk during negotiations). Whoever goes in, it is their job to sit back, be quiet, and let the best talker left on the team communicate through the drone with Mr. Johnson. The benefits of this are twofold. The negotiator doesn’t feel the same personal pressure when talking through a drone. Much like “trolls”—the Matrix kind, not the big metahumans—that level of personal separation often frees one to say things they would never say to someone’s face. The second benefit is the lack of olfactory or any other form of hormone analyzing and processing systems, making implants designed to sway people via subconscious chemical cues completely ineffective. The team members in the room may start wondering why their negotiator is such a dick to their new best friend, but as long as the negotiation is defined at the beginning as between the corp drone and the real drone, those runners who catch feelings for Mr. Johnson shouldn’t be a problem. Kane once told me of a rigger he knows down in the Carib League who will run solo jobs but hires local gangers or squatters to go into the meet and stand with the drone. He said the move has become such a common occurrence that area Johnsons have told the rigger not to bother bringing in the local. Kane said the rigger sticks with it to help out locals without making it look like a handout.
Hope that helps everyone understand that riggers aren’t just your wheelman. They may play that role, but if you find the right one they can be so much more beneficial to the team than just a driver. But the trick, of course, is finding the right one.
