CYBERHACKS
“Cyberhack” began as a derisive term used by traditionalist deckers to demean the rough tech that began to emerge on the black market (originally dubbed “cyberjack terminals”), but it’s been taken up as a badge of honor by hackers who see it as a way to take back the Matrix without using the tools of the authorities who seek to dominate it. The name stuck.
For those unwilling to undergo the extensive surgery needed for a cyberjack augmentation, an external version has been devised. These bulky devices only require the user to have a datajack with which to interface. They are more limited than the cyberware equivalent, but they also don’t require intrusive surgery.
Cyberhacks are designed to take the place of an implanted cyberjack. They interface with an implanted datajack and cyberdeck to provide the additional processing power required for a decker’s Data Processing and Firewall attributes. A cyberhack requires a wired connection to an implanted datajack in order to function. In this way, a cyberhack functions mostly like the implanted version. However, a cyberhack does not provide any Matrix initiative bonus, and the Matrix Edge actions that require an implanted cyberjack or Resonance attribute are not available. Any qualities that improve the effectiveness of a cyberjack do not apply to cyberhacks unless they explicitly state otherwise. When using a cyberhack, you may not switch your Data Processing and Firewall attributes. They can be enhanced, but not changed with other attributes.
Furthermore, cyberhacks are bulky pieces of hardware. So far, no one has managed to make one smaller than an RCC, which makes them difficult to conceal. This has led to some creativity in disguising them as a legal electronic device, like a keytar.
There are some advantages to using a cyberhack, other than saving on Essence loss. The same challenges that make them less capable of faster data processing make them easier to secure against intrusion, resulting in a solid firewall. Due to the less intrusive hardware, a hacker using a cyberhack always takes Biofeedback damage as Stun damage—even when using hot sim VR.
It’s worth noting that while some megacorporations originally developed technology similar to cyberhacks, these projects have been quietly shut down. The megacorporations don’t want tech that makes hacking the Matrix more accessible on the open market, and so they pretend it’s impossible. All cyberhacks are black-market items, created without the official sanction of any legitimate business. Some of these are small deckmeister shops, but larger-scale illegal tech manufacturing has become a lucrative enough business that some otherwise-legitimate corporate operations are adapting their business model to take advantage of the demand. Some even have brand models, such as the Yakuza Katana, Erika Hoffmeister, Mafia Consiglieri, Krime Slasher, McHugh’s SupersizeMe, and Taco Temple Macuahuitl. Though legit corporations pretend these represent trademark infringement by criminal operations (sometimes they’re even telling the truth), organized crime syndicates have found cyberhack and custom cyberdeck component production to be a profitable
revenue stream.
